Some days are for living in more than others, some days are high days, holidays, holy days, and some days are fall between the crack days, days of dropping children at school, stopping for coffee and breakfast after, home to work out the finer details of plot, to sense check the logic of something that’s only made up, to check the news and hold your nerve that it’s not the end of the world, just some days it looks more like it than others, to see the sun emerge from days of cloud and sack work off in favour of the pub and pizza straight from the oven, pizza so hot it’s impossible to tear slices from it until the cheese begins to congeal, lending it the solidity needed to lift it to your mouth, and after, check the final sales in the shops with the spare half hour before school pick up and so the day goes, could be wasted or could be lived, depending how full you want to see it; and hot chocolate after school and home again, chicken stock turned to soup, garlic roasting for pasta as I pack for a weekend away, four notebooks to lay out on the train table tomorrow, but today, a fall between the crack day, if not for this.
