" and I will berate myself for doing nothing at all about the state of the planet while knowing full well if she did not have the giant dreamhouse, some other child would."
Did she write this as a commentary on how we easily excuse ourselves of responsibility ....
Indeed, yes. I've not been able to stop thinking about how we excuse ourselves of responsibility since I read The Diver's Game by Jesse Ball, really recommend.
This is just brilliant. I was right there with you. In fact I wish I was! It sounds like a lot of fun.
Your story resonated on so many levels.
There is something about "fine dining" and ostentatious opulence that makes me very uncomfortable. It doesn't feel real. You convey that sense perfectly.
Being told "no" or " that is simply not done" or "thou must not..." will simply pique our curiosity and desire to do the opposite. Fundamentalist Christian upbringings have been wonderful at creating a whole population of sexual and sensual life adventuresses.
It feels so forced, doesn't it? In a similar way to 'fun' activities. I love the thought of the benefits of a Christian upbringing, very opposite to the intended effect.
Have fun in the rabbit holes! I went down a massive Baudrillard rabbit hole a few years ago, still not sure I'm out it, my novel is kind of build around his ideas of the simulacrum.
I entirely agree with you. Those few times I’ve dressed almost formally to go out on a date or for business purposes I’m tempted to act like a six year old boy, unperturbed by the linen, china and extensive (not to mention expensive) menu with a professional waiter standing at attention against a nearby wall, anticipating my every need.
When the time would come to select an appropriate wine my temptation would be to either ask if they had 7-up or point to anyone in general just to say “I’ll have what they’re drinking”.
Lovely piece of writing. Engrossing.
Thank you!
You drew me in. I haven’t read anything in a while that’s done that. Thank you.
Thank you. Accidental, but really nice to know.
I hope your ‘other miniature thing’ is either behaving its self or being dealt with. Great read.
loved this
Thanks for an enjoyable read!

Loved this! I also love making the real feel like a play.
Plus, thank you for that Disneyland quote, has me down an internet rabbit hole now..

Haha. ME TOO. I find it all so strange, and dive bars are much more fun.
Wonderful writing.
Thank you.
All the tiny, delicate, engrossing, and threatening things made for a great read here. Thank you.
Thank you, that's great to hear.
I think I might know your friend! Is her first initial J?
it is. So you just might know her.
Then I definitely think I know her slightly, know her sister and nieces much better
Beautiful writing. Thank you.
Thank you.
Brilliantly written. This felt like literature. Something worth rereading and thinking about. Bravo.
Blessings upon you and yours. Wishing you a successful journey around the 1mm intrusion.
